One Sound Serving Two Traditions at Once

Klim is unusual among Tantric bijas for belonging fully to two theologically distant traditions rather than one, and both claim it without either being able to establish clear priority. Shakta sources treat it as the kama bija, the seed of desire, closely tied to Kali and to attraction as a cosmic force the goddess wields rather than merely feels. Vaishnava Tantric sources, working from the Gopala Tapani Upanishad, place the same syllable at the head of the Gopala mantra addressed to Krishna in his form as the cowherd beloved of the gopis, where desire is read instead through the register of divine romantic longing. Because both textual traditions are genuinely old, no scholarly consensus exists about which usage is earlier or whether one borrowed the syllable from the other, and it is equally possible that klim arose independently within both currents from the same underlying Tantric theory of bijas correlated to psychological and cosmic forces.

Transmission today mostly keeps the two uses in separate lineages, a Shakta initiate receiving klim within Kali or Devi sadhana and a Gaudiya or other Krishna devotee receiving it within Gopala mantra practice, with relatively little cross reference between the two communities' teaching of it. Translators accordingly render klim differently depending on context, as an impersonal cosmic force in Shakta commentary and as devotional longing in Vaishnava commentary, and a single fixed English gloss for the syllable across both contexts would misrepresent at least one of the two traditions that use it.
