The Seed of Attraction

Klim is a seed syllable (bija mantra) associated in the tantric tradition with attraction and desire, known as the kama bija, the seed of longing or love. In Shakta practice it is linked especially with the goddess Kali, and in Vaishnava contexts it is used in mantras of Krishna, in both cases as a sound held to draw its object near, whether the presence of the deity or the fulfilment of a wish. Like the other seeds it is not a word to be translated but a concentrated sound treated as the sonic body of the power it represents, employed on its own in japa and as a component of longer mantras. Its association with desire places it within the frankly world-affirming strand of tantric practice, which harnessed the energies of longing and attraction toward religious ends rather than simply renouncing them, and it appears widely across tantric mantra literature.

Klim is known in Shakta and Tantric literature as the Kama Bija, the seed syllable of desire, one of a small set of especially potent monosyllabic bijas, alongside Hrim, the Maya bija, and Krim, associated with Kali, that recur across goddess-centred tantric practice independently of any single deity's full name-mantra. Klim is particularly associated with Krishna in some Vaishnava tantric contexts and with the goddess in her attractive, alluring aspect in Shakta contexts, and its recitation is traditionally held to draw toward the practitioner whatever the accompanying practice is directed toward, a use some tantric lineages restrict or bind to initiation given the concentrated, non-neutral power the tradition attributes to it.
