The Salute She Would Not Give

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Lillian Gobitas was a child in a Pennsylvania public school in the 1930s when she refused to salute the American flag, a small act that grew into a legal fight reaching the United States Supreme Court. For a Jehovah's Witness, saluting a flag is not a matter of patriotism weighed against politeness. Scripture, as the faith reads it, reserves that kind of reverence for God alone, and a pledge performed with a hand over the heart toward a piece of cloth crosses a line Witnesses are taught not to cross, whatever the social cost of refusing.

Knocking opens its account of Jehovah's Witness belief with her story precisely because the cost was so visible: expulsion from school, a court case, a name attached permanently to a constitutional argument about whether a state can compel a gesture of civic reverence from a child whose faith forbids it. Directors Joel Engardio and Tom Shepard, working from Engardio's own upbringing inside the faith, use her case to make a point the rest of the film returns to with its other subjects: a belief that looks merely stubborn from outside can be, from inside, a serious theological line that costs something real to hold.

The film does not ask a viewer to adopt that reading of scripture. It asks only that the refusal be understood as a doctrinal commitment rather than an act of simple defiance, a distinction Gobitas's own case forced an American court, and not only a documentary audience decades later, to take seriously.
