Managing a City the Size of a Country for Six Weeks
The scale of a full Kumbh Mela is now managed with tools no earlier gathering had available: Indian authorities have deployed extensive CCTV networks, artificial intelligence based crowd density monitoring, dedicated mobile phone applications for pilgrims, and lost-and-found systems using facial recognition to reunite separated family members within a temporary settlement that can outnumber the population of many countries for the weeks the festival runs, an infrastructure and security operation on a scale few other recurring public events anywhere in the world require.
Even with this level of modern planning, the sheer density of the crowds at the most auspicious bathing moments remains a serious and recurring safety risk, and the 2025 Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj, reported as among the largest human gatherings ever assembled, was marked by a deadly crowd crush during one of the peak bathing days, an event that prompted public criticism of crowd control arrangements and renewed debate over how much further safety planning can realistically manage a voluntary religious gathering whose total size is determined by the collective decisions of tens of millions of individual pilgrims rather than by any organiser's fixed capacity limit.
