The All Nippon Kyudo Federation, established in the twentieth century, now oversees standardised ranking and formal instruction across Japan and, through affiliated international federations, across a global community of practitioners well beyond Japan, a modern institutional structure that has helped kyudo spread internationally while maintaining a comparatively strict adherence to traditional form and etiquette relative to some other martial arts that have modernised or simplified more substantially for a global, often more casually engaged audience. Kyudo today occupies a position that sits somewhere between a martial art, a Zen influenced contemplative discipline, and a still actively performed Shinto ceremonial practice, a combination its practitioners and teachers generally regard as inseparable rather than as three different things sharing one physical activity, form, mind and ceremony understood within the discipline as facets of a single unified practice.
