Composed to Be Sung in a Field at Sunset

Lekha Dodi was written for a specific and, at the time, novel ritual practice originating among the circle of Kabbalists gathered at Safed in the Galilee in the sixteenth century: rather than welcoming the Sabbath only inside the synagogue, this community began going out to the surrounding fields at sunset on Friday evening to greet the Sabbath itself, personified as a bride, arriving from the wilderness, a practice connected to the intense mystical revival associated with figures including Moshe Cordovero and Isaac Luria who were active in the same Safed community around the same period. Alkabetz composed the hymn specifically for this outdoor greeting ceremony, and though the literal walk into open fields has mostly given way to the practice's absorption into the ordinary synagogue service as the opening of Kabbalat Shabbat, the hymn retains that original ritual gesture in its language, addressing the Sabbath directly and instructing the congregation to rise and go out to meet the approaching bride.

The poem also carries a hidden authorial signature: the first letter of each of its eight opening stanzas spells out Shlomo Halevi, the poet's own name, an acrostic device common in medieval and early modern Hebrew liturgical poetry that let a poet mark authorship within the text itself in an era before formal publication and attribution conventions existed in anything like a modern form, a technique also used by other paytanim, liturgical poets, of the period to claim their compositions without needing an external record.
