Overview

The Lia Fail is a granite pillar stone on the Forrad, or Inauguration Mound, of the Hill of Tara in County Meath, the ceremonial heart of early Irish kingship. In medieval tradition it was the coronation stone of the High Kings of Ireland and was said to roar beneath the foot of a rightful king. It is a genuine, visible standing stone, distinct from the Scottish Stone of Scone with which later legend confused it.

The Lia Fail, or Stone of Destiny, stands on the Inauguration Mound (Forrad) at the Hill of Tara, County Meath, the ceremonial seat of the high kings of Ireland in early Irish tradition. Medieval Irish legend credits it with the power to cry out or roar beneath the rightful king when he stood upon it, a supernatural test of legitimacy rather than a claim this atlas treats as historical fact. Unlike the physically transported Stone of Scone, the Lia Fail's documented history involves no claimed removal, theft or foreign coronation use of any kind; whatever authority attaches to it derives entirely from its continuous physical presence at Tara across the span the Irish literary tradition describes, a presence that is itself verifiable, even though the inaugurations the tradition associates with the stone are not independently documented outside that same literary corpus.
