Pisces 29: The Old-Fashioned Clock

The Welsh catalogue sets a timepiece on the zodiac's penultimate degree: an old-fashioned clock. Charubel, the pen name of John Thomas, published an image for every degree in 1898, and even then the clock he saw was old-fashioned, a machine already belonging to a previous generation. A clock is measured time made audible, the household's steady witness, and an old one carries its history in its tick, hours it has already struck for people already gone.

Read against the twenty ninth degree of Pisces, one step from the zodiac's end, the image is nearly self-interpreting: time acknowledged, inheritance running on, the cycle audibly counting itself down. That the clock still works is the gentle point; what is old-fashioned is not finished. The scenes most modern readers know for this degree descend from the 1925 sitting in Balboa Park, where the clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler produced an image for each of the 360 degrees and Marc Edmund Jones recorded the set, publishing it in 1953; the now-standard wording is Dane Rudhyar's, from his 1973 An Astrological Mandala, still in copyright and not reproduced here. Charubel's catalogue is half a century older and public domain. Beneath both lie the ancient frames: this degree stands in Pisces's third decan, ruled by Mars in Vettius Valens's second century faces, while at twenty nine degrees the Egyptian term passes to Saturn, time's own planet arriving to close the sign. Where a natal placement or progression falls here, the tone is the counted hour, endings kept honestly on the mantel.
