Religion and History in Luxembourg

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Luxembourg is a small Grand Duchy wedged between France, Germany and Belgium, historically Roman Catholic and still mostly so on paper, but decades of immigration and secularization have left barely a third of residents actively practicing any faith, with a growing unaffiliated population, an Orthodox and Muslim presence tied to Portuguese, Balkan and North African migration, and small Protestant and Jewish communities that trace their legal recognition back generations.

The country's tiny size and open economy, home to the headquarters of major European Union institutions and a large foreign workforce that outnumbers native Luxembourgers in the capital, have made its religious landscape more a reflection of who has recently arrived than of who has always lived there, a striking reversal for a country whose religious identity was, within living memory, defined almost entirely by an inherited Catholic majority.
