The Nikaya Scholars Reach For First

Modern academic and practitioner engagement with early Buddhism draws on the Majjhima Nikaya more heavily than on any other single nikaya, in large part because its middle length gives individual suttas enough room to present a sustained line of reasoning or a complete meditative instruction while remaining short enough to translate, teach and study as discrete units, a balance neither the terse, numerically organized Anguttara Nikaya nor the sprawling Digha Nikaya offers as consistently. Its 1995 complete English translation by the monastic scholars Bhikkhu Nanamoli and Bhikkhu Bodhi remains one of the most widely used gateways into the Pali Canon for both academic and practicing Buddhist audiences outside traditionally Pali-literate communities, a testament to the collection's perceived centrality.

Scholars generally treat the Majjhima's content as reflecting an early, formative layer of Buddhist teaching, since its suttas engage directly and repeatedly with named rival ascetic and Brahmanical teachers and positions current in the Buddha's own lifetime, providing valuable comparative evidence for the wider Indian philosophical environment of the 5th century BCE alongside its primary function as a record of the Buddha's own doctrine on ethics, meditation and the nature of suffering and its cessation.
