Makara as Chart Machinery: Lord, Exaltation, Nakshatras

Shani, Saturn, owns Makara, the first of his two signs, and the house it occupies is read through his condition.

Mangala, Mars, is exalted in Makara, with the exact point given as the twenty eighth degree, and Guru, Jupiter, is debilitated here, with the low point at the fifth. The two therefore sit near opposite ends of the sign, so early Makara and late Makara are read very differently. Mars exalted in a sign of Saturn is a placement the classical texts treat as strong for action and endurance, while Jupiter debilitated in the same sign is among the placements most often examined for a chart's difficulties, and both facts belong to the same thirty degrees.

Because Jupiter's exaltation is in Karka, his debilitation must fall in Makara, the opposite sign; and because Mars is debilitated in Karka, his exaltation must fall in Makara. The Karka and Makara axis is thus a straight exchange between Guru and Mangala, in the same way that Mesha and Tula are an exchange between Surya and Shani.

The nakshatras crossing Makara are the last three quarters of Uttara Ashadha, then Shravana entire, then the first two quarters of Dhanishtha. Their vimshottari lords are Surya, Chandra and Mangala. Dhanishtha straddles the boundary into Kumbha, so a planet in late Makara sits in a mansion that mostly belongs to the following sign, and the mansion reading and the sign reading will not agree. That is the ordinary condition where twenty seven divisions are laid over twelve.
