Leo 28: Little Birds on a Great Limb

Many small birds crowd onto a single branch of a large tree, a scene of abundance and multiplicity rather than of any one bird singled out, the branch itself sturdy enough to hold all of them at once. Wheeler's image, from the 1925 Balboa Park session, is read here through Rudhyar's 1973 language, which carries an unusually candid qualifier for him, admitting that this much possibility crowded onto one branch is not straightforwardly good news. The shadow is named almost in the same breath as the promise: too many potentialities perched in the same place can crowd each other out as easily as they can inspire, a branch that holds everyone but chooses no one path in particular.

Leo generally prefers a single, clear stage rather than a crowded branch shared with many others, so a degree this near the sign's end asking it to hold space for multiple, competing possibilities at once is a genuine test of a sign more comfortable choosing one thing and committing to it fully. The image gives no count of the birds, only many, which keeps the degree from ever resolving into an arithmetic problem about how much possibility is actually too much, leaving that judgment entirely to whoever is reading the branch.
