Reintegration

Pasqually's doctrine survives chiefly in his Treatise on the Reintegration of Beings, dictated to his secretaries in the 1770s, circulated in manuscript among the Elus Cohens, and first printed only in 1899. It reads Genesis as the record of a double fall: first of the spirits who rebelled before the world was made, then of Adam, who was placed in the material creation as their jailer and was seduced into their prevarication in turn. The human task, in Pasqually's vocabulary, is reintegration, the return of humanity, and through humanity all beings, into the divine unity from which emanation departed. The theurgic operations of the order were the practical arm of the doctrine, their angelic manifestations understood as graduated signs that the operator's reconciliation was proceeding.

The doctrine outlived the order through two men. Jean-Baptiste Willermoz folded the teaching into the Rectified Scottish Rite, where a form of it persists inside European Freemasonry. Louis Claude de Saint-Martin, Pasqually's sometime secretary, abandoned ceremonial operation for an inward mysticism, the Way of the Heart, and his writings as the Unknown Philosopher carried the reintegration doctrine to a broad readership. When Papus organized the Martinist Order in 1891 out of Saint-Martin's legacy, Pasqually stood at the head of its lineage, where French occultism has kept him ever since.
