Mathematics is the study of quantity, structure, space and change, pursued through formal proof and deduction from explicit axioms rather than through observation or experiment. Classified among the formal sciences, its systematization is generally dated to around 300 BCE, when Euclid's Elements built the whole of geometry from a small set of axioms by deduction alone, establishing proof from first principles as the discipline's defining method rather than accumulated practical rule.
For an atlas of religion and belief, mathematics matters because of a history broader than proof alone. For most of its history the field was pursued alongside astronomy, and through astronomy alongside judicial and horoscopic astrology, so that the same deductive and computational tools that built geometry and number theory were also the tools that calculated a calendar's leap years, a horoscope's planetary positions and a numerological reading of a sacred text's letters. It remains the discipline behind the treatment of calendars, numerology and divinatory calculation this atlas records.
That shared origin is why it matters here specifically. A ritual calendar's calculation, a divinatory system's numeric structure or a sacred text's numerological reading are not incidental borrowings from mathematics but direct applications of its own deductive method, and mathematics is the discipline that can say whether such a calculation is internally consistent on its own formal terms.
