Maximin's Secret: The One That Was Never Told

Both children at La Salette received a private message from the apparition, sealed as a personal secret each was told to guard until permitted to reveal it, and the two secrets had strikingly different afterlives. Both children sent their secrets in writing to Pope Pius the Ninth in 1851, on the advice of the bishop of Grenoble. Melanie Calvat's secret was eventually written down and, after decades of delay and internal church debate over whether to permit its release, published in 1879, revealing an apocalyptic text warning of coming disasters and moral decline that provoked controversy within the church precisely because of its severity and its claim to prophetic authority. Maximin's own secret took the opposite path: it was never published at all, and its content is known, if at all, only within the closed correspondence the Vatican received. The asymmetry has never been fully explained in the public record, and the church's own 1851 approval of the apparition addressed the reported event at La Salette itself rather than validating the content of either child's separate written secret, a distinction the church maintained even as one secret became public controversy and the other simply never surfaced.
