The Modern Yogas as a Class

This category collects the combinations that circulate widely in contemporary Indian astrology but are not established in the classical corpus, and separating them out is a matter of honesty rather than of judgment. The clearest example is Kala Sarpa Yoga, the enclosure of all seven planets within the nodal axis, which is absent from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and from the older handbooks under that name and description, and which appears in twentieth-century compilations and popular manuals; a substantial remedial-ritual trade has grown up around it. Others in this class are modern extensions or renamings of classical material.

The distinction matters because Jyotisha is often presented as a wholly ancient and unchanging system, and it is not: it has a long textual history with datable additions, regional schools that disagree, and a modern popular layer shaped by print, radio and now the internet. Saying which layer a technique belongs to is part of describing it accurately.
