A Young Cleric's Recognition of the Bab Becomes the Night Two Religions Date Their Founding From

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Mulla Husayn Bushrui was a young Shaykhi cleric who became the first person to recognize Siyyid Ali Muhammad as the Bab, the Gate, a documented specific recognition distinct from a general expectation shared broadly among Shaykhi clergy at the time. That recognition took place on the evening of 22 to 23 May 1844 in Shiraz, a documented dated encounter distinct from a gradual conviction that formed without any single identifiable moment.

Baha'is and Babis count him as the first of the Letters of the Living, the eighteen initial disciples who carried the new movement's message across Iran, a documented founding role distinct from one convert among many with no particular priority among them. His own recognition of the Bab is treated in Babi and Baha'i sources as the founding moment of the new religion, a documented reckoning distinct from a movement whose beginning is dated instead to a later public announcement or event.

That both the Babi and Baha'i traditions date their own beginning to the specific night Mulla Husayn recognized the Bab in Shiraz, rather than to any later, more public event, marks his own act of recognition as a documented case where one young cleric's private conviction became, in his own tradition's later reckoning, the moment an entire religious movement began.
