Over the years following his recognition of the Bab, Mulla Husayn traveled and taught extensively, a documented sustained missionary career distinct from a single dramatic act followed by withdrawal from further activity. In 1848 he led several hundred Babis to the Shaykh Tabarsi shrine in the forested Mazandaran province of northern Iran, a documented mass relocation distinct from a small band of close followers acting alone.
At the shrine the group fortified the site against besieging government and clerical forces, a documented military defense distinct from a purely religious retreat undertaken without expectation of armed conflict. Mulla Husayn was killed in battle there in February 1849, a documented death in combat distinct from a death by execution or by natural causes removed from the siege itself, and the fort fell to the besiegers not long afterward.
That the same man whose recognition of the Bab in Shiraz is treated as the founding moment of a new religion later led hundreds of its early followers into a fortified defense where he himself died in battle, marks Mulla Husayn's own path from Shiraz to Shaykh Tabarsi as a documented case where the movement's first convert also became one of its earliest fatalities in its defense.
