At Thebes, Mut completed a family of three deities together with Amun, the city's supreme god, and their son the moon god Khonsu, a grouping modern Egyptologists call the Theban Triad and that Egyptian sources treat as the working divine household behind the Amun cult's rise to national importance. Mut's own temple precinct sat just south of the main Karnak complex, connected to it by an avenue of ram headed sphinxes, and its most distinctive feature was Isheru, a horseshoe shaped sacred lake that curved around three sides of the temple, a shape unique among Egyptian temple lakes and one scholars connect to her mythological role as a returning, pacified lioness whose rage cools as she circles home.
Statues of Sekhmet in her lioness form, numbering in the hundreds at the height of the New Kingdom, once ringed the temple courts here, physical evidence of how completely Mut's cult had folded that fiercer goddess into its own worship. Festivals at Isheru marked the transition of the flood season and reenacted the myth of the wandering, dangerous goddess who leaves Egypt and must be coaxed home and calmed, a story told elsewhere of Hathor and Sekhmet alike and applied at Thebes to Mut as the resident form that mattered locally. Long after the height of the New Kingdom, the precinct at Isheru continued in use into the Late Period, and Mut's standing as queen of the Egyptian gods, seated beside Amun rather than beneath him, remained one of the clearest statements Egyptian religion made about a goddess's capacity to hold supreme rank in her own right.
