Nana Buluku's Absence From the Shrine
Nana Buluku carries a same-figure-other-register edge to Deity 47127 because Fon tradition holds her the primordial creator standing before Mawu and Lisa themselves, a real and attested theological claim recorded directly on that entity. It is a different claim from active cult, and Herskovits's ethnography states the absence plainly: there is no shrine, priesthood or festival tradition dedicated to Nana Buluku distinct from those built around the twins she is said to have created. Where Mawu-Lisa's own withdrawal at least followed a period of active governance before the vodun took over daily affairs, Nana Buluku's account gives her no period of governance at all; she is remembered as having created and immediately withdrawn, a still more remote position than the deus otiosus already recorded for Mawu-Lisa. The deity-register entry's own veneration status, no cult attested, reflects exactly this absence rather than any uncertainty about her theological standing, which Fon tradition treats as settled and foundational. Her precedence is acknowledged in the fullest tellings as older even than the created universe her descendants would go on to govern, a cosmological claim the tradition holds without contradiction alongside the plain fact that no household turns to her directly for help with an immediate problem, the same practical logic already recorded for Mawu-Lisa's own absence from the shrine.
