A Navel That Names a City, and One That Is Cultivated Inside a Body

Qosqo, the Quechua name behind the Spanish rendering Cusco, is traditionally understood to mean navel, and the Inca organized their capital around that reading quite literally: the ceque system, a network of conceptual lines radiating outward from the Qorikancha, the city's principal temple, treated the temple as the fixed center from which the empire's sacred geography and its calendar of ritual observances were measured. Unlike the Delphic omphalos, a single marked stone within a larger sanctuary, Cusco's navel status was built into the structure of an entire imperial religious system, with the Qorikancha functioning as the point every other sacred site's position was ultimately reckoned against.

Daoist internal cultivation locates a comparable center inside the practitioner's own body rather than in the landscape at all. The dantian, most often placed a few finger-widths below and behind the navel, is treated in Daoist breathing and movement practice as the body's primary reservoir of vital energy, qi, cultivated and circulated through specific breathing techniques, postures and meditative attention rather than visited as a pilgrimage site. Where Delphi and Cusco each externalize the idea of a world navel onto a fixed place a pilgrim can travel to, Daoist practice keeps the same organizing image but turns it inward, making the navel's religious significance a matter of the practitioner's own physiology rather than of geography at all.
