A Name That Means Sanctuary Itself

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Nemetona is unusual among Gaulish deities in that her name is not a name in the ordinary sense at all: it is the Celtic word nemeton, sacred grove or sanctuary, with a goddess-forming ending attached, so that worshipping her was, in a real sense, worshipping the concept of consecrated ground itself rather than a figure with a domain like healing or war. That abstraction did not stop her from taking on very concrete local roles at two quite different frontier sites. At Bath, in Roman Britain, she appears on a dedicatory altar as consort to Mars Loucetius, a war-and-thunder Mars, protecting the thermal sanctuary alongside the site's own goddess Sulis, a role that reads as guardianship of a specific healing precinct. Near Trier in the Rhineland, by contrast, she had an independent sanctuary of her own with no consort named, and the Roman-era settlement that grew around it, Nemetodurum, fort or market of the sacred grove, survived the fall of Rome, changed language twice, and settled into modern French as Nanterre, a Paris suburb whose name today advertises nothing about its origin to the millions who pass through it. A goddess whose name literally means sanctuary ended up naming an actual place that outlived every other trace of her cult by roughly two thousand years.
