Nezha's defiant self sacrifice found an unexpected second life in Chinese animation nearly four centuries after the Ming novels fixed his story. The 2019 film Nezha, produced independently in China, retold the god's birth and his conflict with his father in a version that leaned hard into the theme of a young figure rejecting the fate others assigned him, and it became the highest grossing animated film in Chinese box office history at the time of its release, spawning a sequel that broke records again and a wider franchise built around the character.

Chinese commentary and state media coverage explicitly framed the film's success as evidence of a maturing domestic animation industry capable of competing with imported blockbusters, and the production drew on the old legend's most dramatic beat, a child returning his flesh and bones to end his family's debt, while updating its emotional register for a contemporary audience uneasy with rigid inherited obligation. The episode shows a centuries old temple deity moving fluidly into mass popular culture without any sense of rupture, since Nezha's cult as a protective and exorcistic god continues in temples independently of, and largely unaffected by, his enormous new visibility on screen.
