A Claim Not Shared Across the Schools Descended From Nichiren
The claim that Nichiren himself is the True Buddha of the Latter Day is not shared across all of the schools that trace their founding back to him. Nichiren Shu, the older and larger body of Nichiren descended temples, generally teaches that Nichiren was a bodhisattva and an extraordinary teacher who correctly identified the Lotus Sutra as the sole valid teaching for the current age, without elevating Nichiren's own person to the status of Buddha alongside or above Shakyamuni; Nichiren Shoshu's Buddha status claim, built on Nichikan's reading of the Gosho, is a specifically Nichiren Shoshu doctrinal position rather than a claim uniformly held across every school descended from Nichiren's teaching. The distinction matters for how each tradition treats its central object of devotion: Nichiren Shoshu doctrine holds that a particular mandala Nichiren himself inscribed carries unique authority as the object his own enlightenment as the True Buddha directly produced, a claim that depends on accepting Nichiren's Buddhahood in the first place, while schools that read Nichiren as an eminent teacher rather than a Buddha in his own right do not extend the same unique status to any single inscribed object. The disagreement traces to differing lineage claims about which of Nichiren's own disciples correctly transmitted his intended teaching, a dispute already underway among his direct students within years of his death.
