Lord Edward's Small Army and Its Mongol Alliance

The Ninth Crusade was led by the future King Edward I of England, then still known as Lord Edward, whose small force arrived at Acre in 1271 as the last major crusading expedition to reach the Crusader states of the medieval period. Edward won a skirmish at Qaqun and struck an informal alliance with the Mongol Ilkhanate under Abaqa Khan, whose own raids into Syria briefly pressured the Mamluk Sultan Baibars from the east while Edward's own small force pressed its case from the coast.

Edward's army was simply too small to retake any significant territory of its own from the Mamluks despite the Mongol pressure. He survived an assassination attempt by a Hashashin agent sent against him before departing in 1272 on hearing news of his own father Henry III's failing health back home in England. The campaign closed with the 1272 Treaty of Caesarea, a negotiated ten year truce between the Crusader states and the Mamluk Sultanate rather than any real recovery of lost ground for the kingdom. Edward's own alliance with the Ilkhanate marked one of the closer points of cooperation between a crusading army and the Mongols during the whole crusading period, though the coordination between the two forces never developed into any combined campaign of real substance.
