A Doctrine Without a Settled Identity for Its Founder

Where Nation of Islam doctrine states Fard Muhammad's identity with complete theological certainty, as God appeared in human form, the historical record of the man himself is considerably less settled, and researchers who have tried to trace Fard's life before his 1930 appearance in Detroit have proposed a range of competing identifications, drawing on partial and disputed immigration and police records, none of which the Nation of Islam itself has ever treated as relevant to a figure it holds to be God rather than an ordinary historical person whose biography is a matter for documentary verification. Martha Lee's study situates this uncertainty within a broader pattern among early twentieth century African American Islamic reform movements, several of which built their theology around a founder whose exact origins were left deliberately vague or theologically reframed, the Moorish Science Temple founded shortly before by Noble Drew Ali being the closest parallel, though that movement's founder claimed prophetic rather than divine status. The gap between doctrinal certainty and historical record is not treated within the Nation of Islam as a problem to be resolved, since the movement's theology holds that Fard's significance rests entirely on his identification as God rather than on any verifiable personal history.
