Sky Father of the Ob-Ugric Peoples

Numi-Torum is the supreme sky deity of the Khanty and Mansi peoples, indigenous Ob-Ugric communities of Western Siberia related linguistically to the Hungarians, understood as the ultimate source of cosmic and moral law who observes human conduct from the heavens and dispatches his son, the culture hero and mediator spirit Mir-Susne-Khum, to intervene in earthly affairs on his behalf.

Numi-Torum's remoteness from direct human contact is itself a significant feature of Ob-Ugric theology, since he is generally approached only indirectly, through his son or through the wider spirit hierarchy beneath him, rather than addressed face to face in the way a shaman might negotiate directly with a more approachable spirit, reflecting a broader Ob-Ugric cosmological pattern in which the highest sky god is honoured precisely by being kept at a respectful remove. Khanty and Mansi communities maintain aspects of this belief system today alongside Russian Orthodox Christianity, and both peoples are officially recognised as indigenous minorities of the Russian Federation with continuing rights connected to their traditional taiga hunting and reindeer-herding territories in Western Siberia.
