Nyd is the tenth of the twenty four Futhorc runes carried from the Elder Futhark, its name and core reading a direct continuation of Nauthiz, whose own name likewise means need or necessity, both traditions treating the rune as concerned with hardship and constraint rather than reading it, as some of the row's other runes have been reinterpreted, toward an unrelated sense.
R. I. Page's survey notes that Nauthiz and its Old English descendant Nyd are among the runes most frequently discussed in later esoteric and revivalist rune literature precisely because the underlying concept, necessity, constraint, or the hardship that forces growth, translates unusually readily into a modern psychological or self help register, a popularity the medieval sources themselves give no particular warrant for beyond the plain gnomic reading the Old English stanza itself offers. The rune's sound value n carries over unchanged between the two traditions, one of several consonant values, alongside f, u, th and r among the row's opening runes, that show no divergence at all across the split between the Elder Futhark and the Anglo-Frisian futhorc. This popularity has occasionally outrun the primary evidence's own comparatively modest, plainly gnomic content, a gap between medieval source and modern application worth naming rather than letting the modern reading stand in silently for the medieval one.
