Founder, Migrant or Conqueror: How Oduduwa Arrived at Ife

Dynastic tradition remembers Oduduwa as a human founder-king rather than as a creator orisha, and the stories told about how he came to Ife are themselves a genre of political argument rather than a single agreed history. Some accounts describe him arriving from the east at the head of a migrating or conquering group; a persistent regional narrative from Ile-Ife itself instead treats Oduduwa as a local figure who displaced or absorbed an earlier population that had worshipped Obatala, making the Obatala-Oduduwa creation dispute and the dynastic founding story two versions of the same underlying claim to precedence. Suzanne Preston Blier's study of Ife situates these competing accounts within the city's own historical self-understanding, in which a founding narrative is also always a claim about rank.

What the accounts agree on is consequence rather than route: from Ife, Oduduwa's descendants are held to have gone out to found the ruling houses of the other historic Yoruba kingdoms, each carrying a version of the same crown symbolism back with it. Modern Yoruba historians generally treat the figure as a composite, condensing an actual migration and consolidation of power at Ife into a single named ancestor, which is the ordinary way an oral historical tradition organizes founding events around a person rather than a process.
