A God With No Temple: Diffused Monotheism in Yoruba Thought

E. Bolaji Idowu's Olodumare: God in Yoruba Belief, the foundational scholarly study of Yoruba theology, was written partly to correct an earlier generation of European commentary that had described the Yoruba supreme being as a remote, barely relevant figure of little practical religious interest compared to the actively worshipped orisha. Idowu argued instead, drawing on Yoruba proverb, praise poetry, and prayer formulas rather than on outside assumptions about what monotheism ought to look like, that Olodumare's complete absence of temple, priesthood, and direct sacrifice is not evidence of unimportance but a deliberate theological structure the Yoruba themselves articulate clearly: Olodumare's will, unlike an orisha's, is understood to be beyond negotiation or influence, so the entire apparatus of shrine and offering that exists to petition a responsive divinity simply does not apply to him. Idowu coined the term diffused monotheism for this arrangement, in which a single supreme source of being is understood to express itself through many distinct, narratively active divinities who can be approached, argued with, and propitiated in ways Olodumare himself cannot. Every orisha's story, on this reading, takes place beneath a sky Olodumare presides over without entering, much as a traditional Yoruba ruler was understood to reign through intermediaries rather than transact ordinary business directly himself. The theological point and the narrative pattern are the same fact seen from two directions: Olodumare has almost no story because Yoruba theology holds that direct narrative involvement is precisely what distinguishes him from every orisha who does.
