Omar Khayyam, born in Nishapur in 1048 and later buried there after his death in 1131, worked chiefly as a mathematician and astronomer before the poetry that would eventually make him famous in the wider world. His mathematical work gave a geometric solution to certain cubic equations, a genuine advance handled through the intersection of conic sections rather than the algebraic methods that would only come centuries later.

That mathematical and astronomical skill drew him into service at the court of the Seljuk sultan Malik Shah, where Khayyam helped design the Jalali calendar, a solar calendar whose accuracy exceeded the Gregorian calendar that Europe would not adopt for another five centuries. The underlying observational work is recorded in the Zij i Malikshahi, astronomical tables compiled at the Malik Shah observatory in Isfahan that supported the calendar reform.

This technical career, cubic equations solved by geometry and a solar calendar more precise than the one the West would later adopt, represents Khayyam's own documented output as a working scientist at a major medieval Islamic court, work that stands independently of the poetry later generations would attribute to him in far greater volume than he ever likely wrote himself.
