David Diringer's history of the alphabet, still cited as a foundational study of how alphabetic writing actually developed and spread, traces ordinary scripts such as Hebrew, Greek and Phoenician through documented stages of historical change and borrowing, a scholarly baseline against which a later, specifically esoteric use of one of those same alphabets can be measured and understood.
That baseline matters because several traditions recorded here took an already existing, ordinary writing system and gave it a second life as a vehicle for numerology, concealment or ritual inscription, Hebrew letters assigned numerical and mystical significance well after the alphabet's own practical origin, without the ordinary script itself ever stopping being used for everyday writing at the same time.
A script or magical alphabet entry therefore keeps two documented histories distinct where both apply, an alphabet's plain, traceable origin as a practical writing system, and, separately, whatever later esoteric or magical use a tradition layered onto it, since collapsing an alphabet's practical history into its esoteric reputation, or the reverse, would misrepresent either how the script actually came to exist or how it actually came to be used.
