Devotion Within a Doctrine Without Grace

Padmavati's popularity raises a question Jain theologians have addressed directly: how does petitionary worship of a deity square with a doctrine that denies any being the power to intervene in another soul's karma? The standard resolution, laid out in medieval Jain ritual manuals and still taught today, distinguishes between the liberating worship owed to the Tirthankaras, which purifies the worshipper's own mind by fixing it on a perfected example, and the protective worship offered to yakshas and yakshis, which is understood as an exchange of devotion for mundane favor rather than a request for salvation. Padmavati can ward off illness or bless a business; she cannot shorten anyone's path to liberation, because Jain doctrine holds that no external agent can.

Her cult also carries a documented esoteric strand. Padmavati is invoked in Jain tantric and yantra practice, particularly among Digambara ascetic lineages associated with mantra literature, where her bija syllables and geometric diagrams are used for protective and healing ends alongside more strictly devotional temple worship. Scholarship on lived Jainism has used her cult as a case study in exactly this coexistence: a philosophically austere soteriology, in which no deity saves, sitting comfortably beside an active, image-based, boon-granting devotional practice serving the same community. The two are not experienced as contradictory by practitioners, who distinguish clearly between what they ask a Tirthankara to model and what they ask Padmavati to do.
