Reputation, Practice and Reach

Because it is understood, within Palo itself, to work most directly and unsentimentally with the spirits of the dead, Palo Mayombe has acquired a fearsome reputation, and it is the branch most often sensationalised by outsiders as "black magic" or sorcery, a characterisation practitioners reject as a distortion of a religion built on reciprocity between the living and the dead. In practitioners' own understanding its power is real and morally double-edged, capable of being turned to protection and healing or to harm, and bound by the authority of the presiding tata or yaya and the obligations of the pact. Initiation (rayamiento) binds the initiate to the house, its nganga and its ranked hierarchy, and ritual life proceeds through drumming, song in a Kikongo-influenced ritual language, animal offering and possession by the dead.

Palo Mayombe is practised in Cuba and, through twentieth-century migration, in the United States and across Latin America, frequently alongside Santeria, with which many practitioners are also initiated. Scholars treat it as a branch within the wider Afro-Cuban religious complex and as an important vehicle of surviving Kongo religious thought in the Americas; reliable membership figures do not exist, given its secrecy and its organisation around individual initiatory houses.
