A Position Both Sides of the Theism Debate Claim and Reject

Pantheism occupies an unusually contested place in religious classification, since it has historically been condemned as atheism in disguise by orthodox theists, who insist that identifying God fully with nature empties the concept of God of everything that makes worship, prayer, and moral address to a personal deity intelligible, while it has also been dismissed by committed secular naturalists as theism in disguise, an unnecessary and unfalsifiable religious label attached to what is really just nature, described in reverent language rather than plain scientific terms; pantheists themselves have generally rejected both dismissals, insisting the position names a genuine and coherent third option rather than a disguised version of either rival.

Advaita Vedanta and Stoic physics are both sometimes classed as pantheist, though each comparison needs care: Advaita's Brahman is arguably closer to acosmism, since it treats the world of appearance as less real than Brahman rather than strictly identical to it, while Stoic pneuma pervading a rationally ordered cosmos maps onto pantheism considerably more directly. Panentheism developed largely as a deliberate corrective to pantheism from within theology, preserving pantheism's intimate divine immanence while insisting, against Spinoza and Bruno both, that some further divine reality genuinely exceeds the natural universe, a distinction pantheists have generally regarded as either unmotivated or ultimately unintelligible once immanence is taken as seriously as panentheists themselves claim to take it.
