Empowerment Bound, Widely Taught in Structure

Phowa is transmitted only following empowerment from a qualified teacher, consistent with the transmission bound status of the Six Yogas of Naropa as a set, and specific technical instruction is understood within the tradition as requiring direct, personal guidance from a lama holding the relevant lineage rather than being appropriately learned from written description alone, a restriction the tradition treats as protecting practitioners rather than as gatekeeping for its own sake. Despite this transmission bound status, phowa is also unusually widely taught in structured group settings compared with some of the other completion stage yogas, with organised phowa retreats and courses offered periodically by several major Tibetan Buddhist lineages and teachers to lay and monastic students who have received the necessary empowerment, reflecting the practice's particular pastoral importance around death and its relatively defined, teachable structure relative to some other advanced tantric material.
