A Russian Tradition Of Painters' Manuals

The Podlinnik names a tradition of Russian Orthodox icon painters' manuals rather than a single fixed text, existing across numerous manuscript versions that circulated among icon workshops from at least the sixteenth century onward and continued to be copied, adapted and expanded for centuries afterward. Like the Greek Hermeneia tradition it parallels, a Podlinnik typically combines practical instruction, covering pigments, proportion and technique, with iconographic prescription describing how specific saints and religious scenes should be composed, often illustrated with line drawings serving as compositional templates for a workshop painter to follow.

Podlinniki are conventionally divided by scholars into two broad types: litsevoi podlinniki, which are illustrated with drawn figures and compositions serving as visual templates, and tolkovye podlinniki, which rely on written verbal description of iconographic types rather than illustration. This distinction matters for how each type functioned in practice, since an illustrated manual could be followed even by a painter with limited literacy while a purely textual manual demanded closer familiarity with written convention.

The distinction also mattered practically for how a workshop trained new painters, since an illustrated litsevoi manuscript could transmit exact compositional layout even to an apprentice not yet fully versed in the written theological vocabulary that a tolkovye manuscript's prose descriptions would assume its reader already possessed.
