A Century of Giving Made Illegal

For Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast, the potlatch reached its most elaborate development among the southern Kwakiutl between roughly 1849 and 1925, a ceremonial gathering at which a host distributed food, goods, and increasingly manufactured wealth to guests in an order set by rank, marking events such as a marriage, a birth, a death, or the assumption of a new name or title. Formal speechmaking, feasting, dancing, and careful attention to who received what and in what order all reinforced a social hierarchy built on generosity rather than accumulation: a family's standing rose with how much it gave away, not with how much it kept. In 1885 the Canadian government amended the Indian Act specifically to outlaw the potlatch, viewing the wealth-distribution economy it embodied as incompatible with assimilation into a market economy, and a parallel campaign discouraged similar Alaska Native practices under United States administration. Prosecutions continued for decades, most sharply after a large 1921 potlatch at Village Island led to arrests, prison terms, and the confiscation of ceremonial regalia. Canada repealed the ban in 1951, and potlatching resumed openly, with many of the confiscated objects eventually returned to the communities that had made them.
