Purva Bhadrapada is the twenty-fifth nakshatra, straddling the Aquarius-Pisces boundary from 320 to 333 degrees 20 minutes of the sidereal zodiac. Its Vimshottari ruler is Jupiter, its presiding deity is Aja Ekapada, the one-footed goat or unborn one, a fiery form linked to Rudra, and its symbol is the front legs of a funeral cot. The name means the earlier auspicious feet. Jyotisha reads Purva Bhadrapada through intensity, austerity, and transformative fire, the passage marked by the funeral bier, the ascetic heat of Aja Ekapada, and classes it as Manushya gana. Aja Ekapada, the one-footed goat, is a comparatively obscure Rigvedic deity, mentioned only a handful of times in the earliest texts and associated there with fire and the sky's support, and its selection as presiding deity for this mansion, rather than a more prominent god, is itself taken by some scholars as a marker of the nakshatra scheme's antiquity, preserving a name that had otherwise nearly dropped out of active worship by the time of the later Puranas. Jupiter's rulership here, the great benefic presiding over a mansion read as austere and intense, is one of several places in the twenty-seven where the Vimshottari lord's usual character sits in some tension with the mansion's own delineation rather than simply reinforcing it.
