Working With It

Quicksilver was obtained by roasting cinnabar ore in a furnace, the heat driving off metallic mercury as vapor, which was led through a cooled channel and collected dripping as liquid metal, a clean and reliable extraction requiring no complex chemical reduction. Liquid at ordinary temperature and remarkably dense, quicksilver was put to a striking practical use in gold and silver refining: finely divided gold or silver dissolves readily into mercury to form a soft, silvery amalgam, which can then be heated to drive off the mercury as vapor, leaving the pure precious metal behind, a technique called amalgamation that was used at real industrial scale for extracting gold and silver from low grade ore for centuries, including at massive scale in Spanish colonial silver mining in the Americas.

Beyond metallurgy, quicksilver entered medicine in preparations of real and lasting harm, prescribed for a range of conditions including, notoriously, syphilis from the sixteenth century onward, a treatment that likely caused as much suffering from mercury poisoning as it ever relieved from the underlying disease. Alchemically, quicksilver's endless fluidity, its refusal to hold a fixed shape, and its ready combination with nearly every other metal to form an amalgam made it the natural, if imperfect, real-world analogue for the volatile, universally penetrating Mercury principle of the tria prima, a conceptual link the alchemical tradition drew constantly even while distinguishing the philosophical principle from this specific liquid metal in its more careful theoretical writing.
