Rad is the fifth of the twenty four Futhorc runes carried from the Elder Futhark, its name and reading a direct continuation of Raidho, whose own name likewise means riding or a journey by vehicle, one of the more stable continuities across the whole row, since both traditions keep the same core image of travel intact along with a closely related sound value.
R. I. Page's survey of the futhorc situates Rad among the runes whose Anglo-Saxon reading required the least reinterpretation from its continental ancestor, a group that includes Feoh and Ur discussed earlier and stands in contrast to runes such as Thorn and Os, whose Anglo-Saxon stanzas visibly rework or replace their Elder Futhark association. The rune's fifth position is stable across both traditions, following the same Feoh, Ur, Thorn, Os, Rad sequence in the futhorc that Fehu, Uruz, Thurisaz, Ansuz, Raidho follows in the Elder Futhark, a five rune opening run whose order both traditions preserve identically even where individual stanza content diverges. Page also notes that Rad's letterform, a simple diagonal stroke crossing a vertical, recurs with only minor variation across the Elder Futhark, the futhorc and later Younger Futhark tradition, one of the row's more visually stable signs regardless of which tradition's stanza or lack of one accompanies it.
