The Raja Yogas as a Class
Raja yogas are the combinations that the tradition reads for elevation, authority and standing. The defining principle is the association of a kendra lord with a trikona lord: the lords of the angular houses, the first, fourth, seventh and tenth, joined by conjunction, mutual aspect or exchange with the lords of the trines, the first, fifth and ninth. The reasoning is that the angles supply capacity to act and the trines supply merit and fortune, and that neither alone produces eminence.
The class is large, since any of several pairings qualifies, and the texts grade the results by the strength and dignity of the planets involved and by whether they are also lords of difficult houses. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra devotes substantial space to them, and the later handbooks add named variants. The category is one of the most heavily used and most heavily over-promised in popular Indian astrology.
