Vocalic Rr and the Letters Kept for the Pattern

A script preserved by teaching keeps things a script preserved by use would lose, and the rare letters of the varnamala are the test case. Vocalic rr and the two vocalic l letters are drawn on every chart of every Brahmic script, taught in every recitation of the order, and used almost nowhere. They survive because the order is learnt as a whole, aloud, before it is used, so there is no point at which a rare member can quietly fall out. For Ranjana this has a further edge, because the script's modern situation depends entirely on charts.

Ranjana has no Unicode allocation, so there is no character standard listing its letters, and the inventory available to a modern user is whatever the teaching charts and the digital typefaces carry. A letter that survives in the recitation therefore also survives in the fonts, and a letter that fell out of the recitation would have no other place to be recorded. The atlas seeds the forty seven letters that the sources agree on and leaves the disputed six of Nepal Bhasa recorded as an open question rather than filling the gap by assumption, which is the same conservatism the recitation itself practises: keep what is handed down, and do not quietly resolve what has not been settled.
