Compound and Root Together

Modern numerology characteristically reads a number twice, once as its compound two-digit form and once as its reduced root, and the Reduced Achievement is the root half of that pair for the maturity influence. The compound Achievement is held to describe the texture and the particular circumstances, the reduced form the essential aim; practitioners read them together, the one qualifying the other. The distinction belongs to the twentieth-century American system, in which the interplay of compound and reduced numbers does much of the interpretive work, and it carries no counterpart in the classical number lore from which the system borrows only its name.

Walter Burkert's study of the Pythagorean tradition and Underwood Dudley's critical survey, Numerology: Or What Pythagoras Wrought, both treat the compound-and-root pairing that produces this figure as characteristic of the system's twentieth-century American construction; the scholarly verdict on the system's claimed descent from Pythagoras, that it has been largely abandoned as a comparative category, applies here as it does throughout the chart. The sense that this distilled, single-digit theme names something essential is also the kind of effect the psychologist Bertram Forer demonstrated in 1948, when identical, deliberately vague personality sketches handed to thirty-nine students were rated, on average, better than four out of five for personal accuracy, a result skeptics cite as the likely reason a reduced, single-word theme feels specifically true.
