From Tang Anecdote to Song Anthology, the Koan's Chinese Origins

Long before Hakuin gave koan practice its graded modern shape, the device began simply as anecdotes: brief, often startling exchanges between Chan teachers and students in Tang and Song dynasty China, first collected and circulated as instructive stories rather than as a formal meditation curriculum. John McRae's study of Chan's own historical self-representation argues that these collections, gathered centuries after the exchanges they record into anthologies such as the Blue Cliff Record and the Gateless Gate, are themselves already shaped retrospectively by the schools that compiled them, so a koan attributed to an early master often reflects as much about the later compilers' own concerns as about any single historical conversation. The practice of formally sitting with a koan as a meditation object, rather than simply studying the collections as literature, developed further still, reaching Japan through the Rinzai lineage and only receiving Hakuin's systematic graded form centuries after that. What survives in the modern Rinzai curriculum is therefore a layered inheritance: an originally informal genre of Chan anecdote, reshaped by medieval Chinese compilers into fixed literary collections, then reorganized again by a Japanese teacher into a structured training sequence, each layer altering what the earlier one had been for reasons specific to its own moment rather than as a single continuous method handed down unchanged.
