The Prayer of Seeking Guidance

Salat al-Istikhara is a voluntary prayer a Muslim performs when facing a decision between two or more permissible courses of action, such as a marriage proposal, a job change, or a journey. It is not reserved for major life choices alone; tradition holds it fitting for anything one is genuinely undecided about. The practice consists of two rakahs of prayer performed like any other voluntary prayer, after which the worshipper recites a specific supplication attributed to the Prophet Muhammad and recorded in the hadith collection of al-Bukhari. The supplication asks God, who has power where the petitioner has none and knowledge where the petitioner has ignorance, to make the matter easy and blessed if it is good for the petitioner, or to turn the petitioner away from it and show what is good instead if it is not.

Unlike some folk beliefs that have grown up around the practice, the classical instruction does not promise a dream or a vision as the answer. The worshipper is expected to proceed with whichever option seems reasonable afterward and to trust that circumstances, whether ease or difficulty, will bear out the outcome God has chosen. The prayer can be repeated on different occasions if a decision remains unclear, and it may be performed at any licit time outside the few periods when voluntary prayer is discouraged.
