Sama Across the Orders
The argument left its mark most visibly in the distinctive public practices particular Sufi orders built up around it over time. The Mevlevi order, founded on the teaching of the poet and mystic Rumi, developed the turning ceremony popularly known outside the order as the whirling dance into a fully structured devotional rite, understood from within the order itself as a physical enactment of sama's underlying spiritual claim rather than as performance staged for its own sake. The Chishti order, especially on the Indian subcontinent, made qawwali, a form of devotional sung poetry performed at Sufi shrines with instrumental accompaniment, into one of its most visible and enduring public practices, one still performed today at shrine festivals held across South Asia every year. Not every Sufi order that debated sama went on to adopt so public a form of it: some orders kept the practice considerably more restrained or confined it strictly to private gatherings, a variation the historical record attributes to genuine differences of interpretation among the orders themselves rather than to any single authoritative resolution ever reached of the underlying dispute. Where a Sufi order's own ceremonial gatherings are themselves closed to outsiders, as with some initiatory grades within certain orders, this record describes the historical debate over sama and its openly documented forms in Mevlevi and Chishti practice, and does not attempt to reproduce content any order treats as reserved to its own initiates.
