From Individual Freedom to Collective Political Action

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

The freedom Sartre had described mainly as an individual, almost solitary condition in Being and Nothingness became, in his later work, inseparable from politics. He turned increasingly toward Marxism through the 1950s and set out to reconcile it with existentialism in the Critique of Dialectical Reason, published in 1960, arguing that individual freedom is real but always exercised inside material scarcity and social structures that groups can either reinforce or actively resist together, a shift from the earlier emphasis on solitary choice toward what he called group praxis.

That turn carried Sartre into direct political engagement rather than commentary from a distance. He wrote the preface to Frantz Fanon's The Wretched of the Earth in 1961, defending anticolonial violence as a response colonized peoples had not chosen but been forced into, and he spoke out against French conduct in the Algerian War even as it drew threats against his own life. In 1964 he declined the Nobel Prize in Literature outright, stating a writer should not allow himself to be turned into an institution, a refusal consistent with his lifelong suspicion of any fixed role, literary or philosophical, imposed on him from outside.

The philosopher who had defined freedom as a burden each person carries alone spent his last decades arguing that the burden could only be met through collective political action, never resolved by private reflection alone.
