The Wixarika, numbering about 43,929 as of a 2003 count, are not concentrated in one place. Their homeland runs across four Mexican states, Nayarit, Jalisco, Zacatecas and Durango, along the Sierra Madre Occidental, and labor migration has carried communities as far as California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. What travels with them is the religious geography that gives the tradition its shape: five sacred sites at the cardinal points and center of Wixarika cosmology, of which Wirikuta, in the Chihuahuan desert of San Luis Potosi hundreds of kilometers from the Sierra homeland, is the site of the peyote pilgrimage and, by Wixarika account, the place where the sun was born.
That distance between where the people live and where the pilgrimage must go is exactly what put Wirikuta at risk: Canadian mining concessions covering a large part of the desert threatened the site through the early 2010s, and it was the Wixarika Regional Council, working with the broader Wixarika Union, that carried the legal and public fight to have mining halted there, treating the defense of a distant desert as inseparable from the religion practiced back in the Sierra.
The mara'akate, the Wixarika's healers and shamans, and the governing councils of the individual Wixarika communities remain the tradition's working institutions, training successors and directing communal ritual obligation, while the Wixarika Union functions as the modern body that represents Wixarika religious and land interests to Mexican authorities and the wider public, a role no single community government could carry alone across four states.
