The thirty-degree relation appears in Hellenistic doctrine as an aversion, one of the sign relationships Ptolemy's system deliberately left out of the four true aspects, and its formalisation as a minor aspect belongs to the harmonic current associated with Johannes Kepler and the astrologers who worked after him in the seventeenth century and later. Its glyph is drawn from the same hexagonal construction as the sextile, halved, and it is one of the minority of minor aspects to have been given its own place in the Unicode Standard rather than being improvised from letters: SEMISEXTILE at U+26BA in the Miscellaneous Symbols block, immediately adjacent in the character table to the sextile sign it derives from and the quincunx sign that shares its hexagonal ancestry. That dedicated encoding sets the semi-sextile apart from aspects such as the quintile or septile, which still rely on a letter, a digit, or a font-specific mark rather than a fixed astrological glyph of their own, reflecting how early and how widely each symbol achieved consistent use in printed astrology before digital encoding became a consideration.

The dodecile name itself, from the Greek-derived numeral for twelve, parallels the octile name given to the semi-square, both describing a minor aspect by the number of equal parts it divides the circle into rather than by any claim about its character, a naming habit that runs through the whole family of repeated-halving aspects.
